2011 Kansas City Chiefs
Changes for the Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs come into the 2011 football season, a team in the midst of metamorphosis. The organization may be going through more overhaul than any other going into the season. At the end of 2008 and after 20 loyal years, Carl Peterson resigned as GM, and within weeks, new decision maker, Scott Pioli was lured from New England to take over the position. It did not take long for Pioli to start making his presence felt, as he quickly cut loose head coach Herm Edwards, and signed on Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator, Todd Haley as the new man in charge. Pioli and Haley’s relationship began in ’97 when they both were under Bill Parcels in New York. Haley brought in many new faces with him on the coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, along with him from Arizona. Chan Gailey remains the offensive coordinator, sticking from the Edwards’ tenure.
Pioli then reached out to his former organization and put together a deal, bringing quarterback, Matt Cassel from New England, along with veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel for a second- round draft pick in this past April’s draft. As this story unfolded, it was revealed that Cassel, coming off a super year in replacing the injured Tom Brady, although he had hardly played since high school, also got great interest from Denver’s new management, a move that stirred up Bronco quarterback Jay Cutler so much, a trade was demanded to the point it was granted, shipping the franchise quarterback out of Denver, to Chicago.
Now for fun, my question for you is this. Out of those three teams involved in the talks for Cassel, who had the motive to leak such a story? Maybe the division rival with all the insight from New England they could ever want about Denver’s interests? Conspiracy theories sure are fun.
Pioli continued making bold moves, but his second trade gripped the hearts of all Chiefs fans. Tight end Tony Gonzalez, arguably the greatest player to ever put on a Chiefs uniform was traded to Atlanta for a second round pick in next year’s 2011 draft. Gonzalez, still performing at an elite level, and a strong case for the best tight end of all time, had a proud 12 years in Kansas City, and moving him on is a true sign of the change to come.
Also changing is the defensive scheme, from a traditional, base 4-3, to a 3-4, much to Pioli’s liking. Pioli, spending several years in New England and with Bill Belicheck, notorious for the 3-4, is bringing the scheme with him to Kansas City. This was no more evident, than with the third overall pick in this past April’s draft, taking Tyson Jackson, a defensive end out of LSU, who was projected by most draft analysts not to go until around the 15th or so, but Pioli strongly feels Jackson’s skill set fits the 3-4 scheme being implemented.
Jackson also played college ball with last year’s, top first -round pick, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. This college chemistry, they hope carries over to the NFL a bit, and will help Dorsey along to fulfill his promise in his second season and beyond. Third round pick Alex Magee, a defensive tackle out of Purdue, also figures to be another unselfish, versatile lineman, with long arms that will compete for time, and add quality to the depth up front, on defense.
Free agent acquisitions this off- season did not turn many heads, but giving Cassel targets like wide receivers Bobby Engram and Amani Toomer will allow him to find the intermediate routes that he showed he could throw so efficiently well last season in New England. Consistency from these guys will be crucial to success, as standout wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will probably be facing more double- teams than he is accustomed to seeing during his first two seasons without Tony Gonzalez roaming the field. Returning receiver Mark Bradley, and free agent sign Ashley Lelie hope to step up and give Cassel some speed to help stretch the field as Coach Haley tries to implement the spread- passing attack, Arizona ran so lethally last year.
Second year back Jamal Charles figures to see more action this year, as his receiving skills make him a better fit in Haley’s offensive scheme over Larry Johnson, though Johnson has been on his best behavior this off- season, and is coming into camp in great shape, nearly 10 pounds lighter than before, and a full year separating him from that foot injury in ’07. I will point out that he did average 4.5 YPC last year, which is slightly better than ‘ 06 when he ran for 1700 yards. He just had over 200 less carries. I say that with slight sarcasm.
Their offensive line, is improving, with second year tackle Brendan Alberts having a high ceiling, and free- agent Mike Goff helping solidify one of their weakest areas. Signing veterans Zach Thomas at linebacker, and safety Mike Brown can only make a football team better, as the two are widely- respected professionals with well- documented careers.
Acquiring the solid veterans to mix in with their young talent like linebacker Derrick Johnson, cornerback Brandon Flowers and previously mentioned Cassel, Alberts, and Bowe is a combination Chiefs management hopes gives more than a glimpse of success the future is going to hold. Consistency will not be so consistent this year, as they are going through dynamic changes, a metamorphosis. Just what are they going to turn into? You can see for yourself by buying tickets to their home games.
