2011 Cleveland Browns

2011 – 2011 Cleveland Browns

It’s a new year, a time to put behind those years of disappointment and frustration. For now, even if just for a few weeks, we don’t have to repeat the Cleveland mantra of “there’s always next year”. Today, as we bleakly look forward to those cold Sunday afternoons in a city that knows disappointment better than their own children, we can say “our team is the best in the AFC”. Well, at least that’s what all us diehard Browns fan say, even if it’s only true because all the teams in the league are perfect this time of year, Thank the heavens for pre-season and the hope of a new year. Do the Browns have what it takes to keep that slogan alive for the next four months? Maybe, but let’s take a look at the obstacles they will have to overcome to get there. There is the obvious, a new head coach. This is looked at by most of the talking heads as a negative for the team. All the talk is about a new system and the difficulty that comes with a replacement head coach. Really? Is there any way that a team with the worst defense and close to the worst offense can decline in those areas just by switching coaches? I don’t think so. If anything, I think some fresh ideas from a coach that isn’t as round as he is tall will do some good.
Once you get past the coach, you have to look at the offense and what better place to start than with the quarterback dilemma. This, I have to say, is really a mess.  On one side you have the Brady Quinn fans that are looking for something different from a quarterback that did great things at one of the premier colleges in the country. Then you have the Derek Anderson fans that believe he should get the job based on the semi-great year that he had in 2007. I, for one, fall into the Quinn fan base. This team has struggled with consistency with Anderson at the helm. It’s time for Anderson to pull up a bench and let someone else take a shot. Whatever decision is made, I really don’t think that we will be in any worse shape than we were last year. Now, at the running back position, we have some issues. The starting running back was, at one time, one of the best in the league. That was a few years ago though. Now, he is an average back with average speed and no real moves that will blow a defense away. There are some that feel he is past his prime and should have been replaced a few years back. While I don’t see that, I also don’t feel that there is a ton of production left in him either. While the team was busy rebuilding over the winter, they should have spent more time looking at their running back. There have been several on the free agent block that would have been a very nice upgrade, but alas, they were taken by teams looking to actually fill their holes on the team. Now we come to the receiver spot. You have to wonder how poison the Braylon Edwards pill must be.  Every year you watch teams bring in head case stars that seem to carry more baggage than Edwards yet in a year where there were plenty of teams looking for a wide receiver, the Browns were unable to move him. We see receivers like T.O. and Plaxico Burress jump from team to team and still Edwards’ a Brown. Well, at least the team had the foresight to pick some players to replace Edwards in the near future. The receivers that were picked up during the draft should fill the Edwards hole nicely starting next year.
With all the talk about change and the affects it will have on this team, it certainly does seem like this story could have been written anytime during the last 12 years, just change some of them names. Whether you are talking about Brady Quinn or Tim Couch, Cleveland has had it’s share of changes and throughout all of those changes, nothing has really ever changed. Sooner or later, there has to be a change that actually works.
As for the defense, this year, it looks like it is going to be a nice marriage of brown and green. New coach Mangini seems to be pretty fond of his former Jets squad, so much so that he has brought a good number of them over to the Browns. This couldn’t hurt anything since the Jets defense of last year was considerably better than the Browns defense.

With all the changes, I think it is safe to say that the Browns will not be the “Best team in the AFC” but who knows, maybe they will be a little better than the teams of the past. The great thing about football is that you have to play the games to prove your worth. This gives every team a fighting chance, no matter how bad you have been in the past.

    Highlights

For 2011 A few teams stand out as going to the Super Bowl, the San Diego Chargers, the New England Patriots, the New Orleans Saints, and the Atlanta Falcons. They all seem to have made key changes to effect their game for the positive. Out of those four, the Patriots and the Falcons really have honed in to what they needed to accomplish over the off season, and so they will be in the Super Bowl.

New York GiantsNew York Giants
We have 50 yard line tickets for all home and away New York Giants games. The New York Giants have been surprisingly quiet. Wide receivers Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress are not part of the team anymore. Who will fill that void? Does Eli Manning have it again? Even if Eli has got it, they would be a long shot for the Super Bowl

Atlanta FalconsAtlanta Falcons
We stock tickets for all Atlanta Falcon NFL games at the Georgia Dome. Atlanta has made all the right moves this off season. They have kept all their key players, quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Michael Turner, and wide reciever Roddy White. They added an excellent tight end in Tony Gonzalez, and linebacker Mike Petersen. They are ripe for a repeat performance from last year.
